It's a work in progress
Going out with friends and socialising is something a lot of people take for granted however for young people with disabilities this can sometimes be a near impossible experience. Over recent months the Positive Futures team have been working with young people to provide positive activities to overcome traditional barriers to socialising with incredible results.
The “Work In Progress” group has provided young people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy Christmas shopping, bowling, visiting a pantomime and eating out with friends. Success over the various projects has enabled attendees to not only benefit from the opportunity to socialise with peers but to increase confidence and independence levels of those involved so much so that three young people recently chose to attend a residential break at Bendrigg Lodge – some of whom had never been away from home before providing a break for both teenagers and parents alike.
Continuing to have fun the programme recently celebrated a birthday with one member turning eighteen whose ideal way of spending her birthday was to come along to the WIP group with her friends. Commenting on the day one young visitor highlighted the importance of the programme after a trip to a pottery session noting, “I’ve really enjoyed today and if I wouldn’t have come along to W.I.P I wouldn’t have got the chance to come along to this”.
