Go Getting Girls show the power of Positive Futures

Despite the dark nights, young women in Sefton have shone a bright light on their futures by getting involved in a range positive activities during the dark nights.logo-positive-futures

Targeting young women at risk of exclusion, the evening activities have been running for a number of weeks to deliver issue based sessions focusing on important life skills including smoking, drugs, alcohol, sex and relationships while also providing an opportunity to enjoy fun exercise and relaxation sessions.

Throughout the programme the girls in attendance have successfully developed both their physical and mental health by taking part in various sports including boxercise, circuits and street dancing sessions while also enjoying excursions and a party. In addition to developing a healthy lifestyle, the girls have successfully been able to increase their knowledge in relation to essential life kills while building confidence levels in a social setting and self-esteem while building healthy relationships with their peers.

Leanne Dunning, who coordinates the Night Vision project through Positive Futures and the Sefton Youth Service recognised the impact the project has had on the girls who have attended and the rapid rate at which it has grown,

“Since Night Vision began with only a few girls in attendance, the popularity of the programme has grown significantly with more and more girls choosing to attend and continue their involvement each week. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and it is a testament to their hard work and dedication how much they have achieved so far as the girls enjoyed their day ice skating as a reward.”

Despite finishing for the year in 2009, the programme is due to commence again shortly with additional emphasis placed on the involvement of the girls to enable them to put their personal ideas into what issues and fun sessions will be running on the 2010 programme.

Positive Futures programmes run throughout the year for a range of ages, abilities and niche groups. If you would like further information on activities taking place please visit www.moveitsefton.co.uk/postivefutures or contact the team direct on 0151 285 5444.
