Sefton Residents Aim High

Seeking to develop the range of inclusive activities and programmes for children and young people with disabilities, Sefton Leisure Services’ achievements have been recognised as best practice and are now being shared with other authorities.

Working in close partnership with Sefton Children’s Services, the Leisure Services team have logo-positive-futuresundertaken a number of consultation events with the local community to asses the current range of programmes offered to users with disabilities.

Addressing issues identified by members of the community the Aim High for Disabled project has enabled current gaps in service provision to be catered for with funding matched by the Leisure Services department.

In order to increase service provision and provide inclusive activities for all members of the community, the Netherton Inclusive Community Activity Centre will provide a fully inclusive centre, which can be utilised by children and young people with disabilities and their families.

Featuring a sensory play centre including a light room, dark room and soft play facility alongside a library, café, crèche, youth centre, fitness studio, arts centre, outdoor inclusive play area, sports hall and grass pitches the site will be designed to be fully inclusive.

Commenting on the development, Simon Burnett, Principal Development Manager for Sport recognized the impact the new site will have on the local community,

“Our Transforming Short Breaks programme commenced with a lengthy consultation process but which has provided the foundations on which we are able to develop a range of tailored programmes and a centre which is most suited to the needs of our service users with additional needs. As the only team within the UK working on this project we are incredibly pleased with the success we have achieved so far and look forward to continuing to develop the programme.”
