Free Swimming
People aged 60 and over and young people 16 and under can swim for FREE in Sefton.
To take part in the free swim initiative, all you have to do is take a proof of residence (utility bill) and age, along to your local pool. Here a member of the reception team will issue you with your own Active Sefton card and you can collect a public swim timetable.
Swimming pools across the borough will be opening their doors free of charge from April 1, 2009.
Bootle Leisure Centre, Crosby Leisure Centre, Dunes Leisure Centre (Southport), Meadows and Formby Pool will all provide free access to people over 60 and young people 16 and under during their public swim hours.
The new initiative is part of the Government’s 'Swim4life' programme which is linked to the nationwide 'Change4Life' campaign to get people more active and leading healthy lives in the build up to the 2012 Olympics.
Cllr Lord Ronnie Fearn, Sefton Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism, said: "We are very pleased to be involved in the free swimming initiative and to make this offer available in all parts of the borough.
"Swimming is a great way to exercise the whole body and has been given a real boost across the country by the Olympic success of Rebecca Adlington in Beijing.
"We hope as many people possible - both young and old - will take advantage of this scheme at one of the borough's fantastic swimming pools."
Andrew Walker, Sefton Council's Head of Recreation Management, said: "These free sessions are available at all swimming pools in Sefton, including Dunes Leisure Centre, but not covering the Splash World water park.
"We need to provide figures to the Government over the next two years so we will be issuing all customers with a swipe card, but even this will be issued free of charge!"
