Active Kidz

Active KidsWhat is Active Kidz?

The programme emphasises fun, innovative activities that provides children with the knowledge to live a healthy lifestyle, whilst developing physical literacy through FUNdamental movement skills.

All programmes are designed to be inclusive, develop the self-esteem and confidence of all. Participants are rewarded through an Attendance Passport, enabling all children to achieve the same level of success regardless of their physical ability.

Active Kidz Within School

The Active Kidz programme has been designed to target primary aged children 5-11. The programme incorporates key aspects of the National Curriculum Physical Education and aims to enhance all participants in the following areas: Acquiring & Developing Skills, Selecting & applying skills, tactics & compositional ideas, Knowledge & understanding of fitness/health and Evaluating & improving performance. The Active Kidz provides the opportunity for children to participate in high quality physical activity both in and outside the National Curriculum, whilst contributing to the Governments targets of; 75% of Children & Young People participating in at least 2 hours of high quality physical activity per week by 2006, and 85% by 2008.

Active Kidz currently operates across the borough within 14 schools providing 18 sessions per week, supporting the Physical Activity strand of the Healthy Schools Programme.

Active Kidz Within the Community

The Active Kidz community programme aims to bridge the gap between school PE/Sport and Physical Activity within the community, providing clear pathways to a wide range of activities.

We believe that by making activities more accessible within the community children and young people are more likely to become lifelong participants in Sport and Physical Activity.

Sessions

Each Active Kidz session lasts an hour and consists of a warm up, a main activity and a cool down. The aim of each session is to provide a fun safe environment to promote the active learning of FUNdamental Skills, (Agility, Balance & Co-ordination) which can be used in a variety of Sport and Physical Activity.

The aim of the warm up is to prepare the children for physical activity, and reducing the risk of injury during the main activities. A warm up consists of a mobility, pulse raiser and stretching phase.

The first game is usually a short running activity such as ‘tag’ this is to raise the motivation of the children and their confidence within the group. The rest of the time is dedicated to group, pairs or individual games such as parachute activities, throwing and catching or individual skill activities.

After 50 minutes of physical activity the children then complete a cool down. This enables the body to return to its pre-physical activity state and recap on the activities and skills covered during the session.
